Suspensions of micro-fabricated sub-micron magnetic discs – Crossing a river to get water?
At Spintec you pioneered the production and application of microfabricated magnetic discs for biomedical applications [1]. Inspired by your work, we tried a few things ourselves, in our own way. We used etching, rather than liftoff. The reason was we wanted to make the particles really small, using holograpic lithography techniques. Our main application is Magnetic Particle Imaging, which is a big thing in Germany (Bruker). This imaging mode is interesting for those of us in magnetism, since the exact details of the hysteresis loop determine the higher harmonics in the response. The million dollar question is however whether we can beat supspension of magnetic particles made by colloidal chemistry…
