Post-doc in spintronics on the modeling of magnetic skyrmions

Contract Period : 24 months
Expected date of employment : 1 March 2020

Mission: Spintec is calling for applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in spintronics on magnetic skyrmions. Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that are promising for storing and manipulating information at the nanoscale. Spintec has recently demonstrated magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in ultrafine nanostructures [1] and their manipulation using the gate electric field[2,3], electric current [4] and light[5]. These results are a first step towards the practical realization of logic and memory devices based on magnetic skyrmions. The objective of the post-doc will be to model the stability and dynamics of skyrmions and their interaction in ultra-thin layers.

Activities: Activities will include the development of analytical and numerical models, atomic spin simulations and micromagnetic simulations. The aim will be to study the structure of magnetic skyrmions in ultra-thin layers, their stability, dynamics under polarized current, their interactions in the objective of memory and logic application.

Skills: A PhD in physics, nanophysics or equivalent discipline is expected with experience in numerical modeling/simulation and nanomagnetism.

Work Context: This position is part of a larger project to advance fundamental knowledge of magnetic skyrmions for technological applications in memory and logic. The project includes several French and European partners (FZ Jülich). The post-doctoral position will take place within the magnetic skyrmions activity of the Spintec laboratory directed by Olivier Boulle and will be co-supervised by Liliana Prejbeanu directing the micromagnetism activity. The candidate will work closely with the experimentalists involved in the project. The laboratory has its own micromagnetic code, several workstations equipped with GPUs and has access to several computing clusters on the CEA site. At the crossroads of science and technology, Spintec is one of the leading research laboratories in spintronics. The Spintec laboratory is located on the CEA site in Grenoble, France.

Additional Information: Several post-doctoral positions are open within the framework of this project: several experimental positions (characterization, microscopy, material growth) as well as a modelling / numerical simulation position.
